Amazon Shipping’s Aggressive Push: Challenging FedEx and UPS with Lower Rates and Fewer Surcharges

Amazon is intensifying its competition in the U.S. parcel delivery market, leveraging aggressive pricing and simplified fee structures to attract customers from FedEx, UPS, and even the U.S. Postal Service. Since opening Amazon Shipping to all businesses earlier this year, the company has been winning market share through competitive rates and reduced surcharges, according to parcel pricing experts.
Competitive Pricing Driving Market Shift
Amazon Shipping is actively courting shippers with proposals that match or undercut FedEx and UPS pricing. Logistics data platform Loop reports clients saving up to $6 per package by shifting eligible residential volume to Amazon. In one notable case involving a large retail client previously using FedEx, Amazon covered over 90% of the client’s distribution needs while delivering more than 33% in annual savings.
Matt Sumowski of Loop noted that Amazon’s strategy often includes surcharge waivers and less complex pricing structures compared to traditional carriers. This approach has proven especially attractive amid rising FedEx and UPS rates.
Beyond major carriers, Amazon is also challenging the USPS on lighter packages. Hannah Testani, CEO of Intelligent Audit, highlighted that Amazon is “undercutting” the Postal Service on packages weighing less than one pound — a segment where USPS has historically held a strong pricing advantage.
Key Advantages for Shippers
Amazon emphasizes several differentiators:
Transparent pricing
No residential delivery surcharges
No weekend delivery fees
Jeff Helbling, VP of Business and Go-to-Market at Amazon Supply Chain Services, stated: “The momentum tells us businesses see the value it already offers, and we’re just getting started.”
Jack McCrum, Director of Optimization and Analytics at Reveel, observed that Amazon initially focused on lighter packages (under five pounds) going to metro areas. With broader availability to non-Amazon sellers in 2026, the company has expanded its ambitions, negotiating aggressively on revenue per piece to capture market share from UPS and FedEx.
Strategic Implications for Businesses
This competitive landscape presents both opportunities and considerations for shippers:
Cost Savings Potential: Significant reductions in shipping spend are possible, especially for high-volume residential and metro-area deliveries.
Carrier Diversification: Adding Amazon Shipping can reduce reliance on traditional carriers and provide leverage in contract negotiations.
Service Coverage: While Amazon offers strong coverage in many areas, shippers should evaluate density and rural performance against their specific needs.
Contract Complexity: Simpler pricing can reduce administrative burden but requires careful volume commitments and performance tracking.
As parcel rates continue to climb industry-wide, Amazon’s entry is injecting new dynamics into an already competitive market. Companies that strategically evaluate their shipping mix may achieve meaningful cost reductions while maintaining (or improving) service levels.
